Smarter gift giving

We've seen this concept before. Instead of giving a gift certificate to someone to a particular place (hotel, spa, etc.), you can give money to a web site or company that they can cash in however they choose. The idea is great, but often times is complicated for the recipient and ends up going to waste.

Enter Smartbox. Broken up by type of gift (think wellness, sport, or discovery) and by region each "box" includes a book of gifts for the recipient to enjoy in that particular category. Every gift corresponds exactly to the amount given so no extra money needs to be added, plus there are no fees involved with cashing in the gift and the card will never expire.

We love the Adventure box ($70) for groomsmen gifts, or the Serenity box ($120) for a shower gift. And instead of a cash gift, give the Gourmet Retreats box ($370) at the next wedding you go to. It includes a meal and luxury accommodations at one of 120 resorts, Inns or hotels. Smartboxes are sold at Borders and Sam's Club stores around the country, as well as on smartbox.com.
