Save money with moissanite

Moissanite, a mineral made of silicon carbonate, often surpasses the sparkle of diamonds, yet costs about 10 percent less and is guaranteed conflict-free, making it a great, affordable diamond alternative when it comes to engagement rings and wedding bands.

I love this 18K yellow gold and moissanite ring made by Justine Collins of singleB, a jeweler based in Mountain View, California. The gold is from Hoover and Strong, a company with a strong commitment to the environment, and whose metals are recycled. This ring costs $1,160, but some of her beautiful, engagement-worthy rings cost as little as $265. See more of Justine's work on her blog. —Lauren Matthews, editor, Brides Northern California

P.S. Read more about moissanite and see our favorite affordable wedding bands priced under $1,000 in the Spring/Summer 2009 issue of Brides Northern California, on newsstands now.
