Protect yourself from a wedding planning nightmare

HotelChatter.com just posted an article about brides who have been jilted by their wedding location, the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles.

The hotel, which has been booking weddings through 2009 has just announced that they are closing on September 30, 2009 for an 18-month renovation, leaving brides with fall weddings without a place to say, "I do."

For brides and grooms left out in the cold, the hotel has offered their sister hotel, The Beverly Hills Hotel as an alternative. If this location isn't appropriate to the couple they are being offered their money back and if the bride does agree to get married at the Beverly Hills Hotel, the hotel will cover the expense of reprinting the wedding invitations, and other expenses relate to moving a location this late in the game.

While the contract signed between the hotel and couple states that if the couple cancels the wedding within 90-days of the wedding date they lose their deposit, there is no clause regarding refunds if the hotel pulls out of the agreement.

Of course this is a rare circumstance, but it's a good idea to ask your location and vendors to add a clause to your contract stating that if they are unable to perform their services on the day of the wedding you are entitled to a full refund. Most vendors (i.e.: photographer, makeup artist, DJ) will be able to send you a replacement, but uprooting the whole wedding is a bit more difficult.

Another way to protect yourself is to pay deposits and balances with a credit card. You can always call your credit card company to help you fight a vendor and/or venue. Plus, by paying with a credit card you will gain points towards airline miles to help cover your honeymoon flight!
