The Big Announcement

My favorite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon is curl up on my couch with a steaming cup of coffee and the New York Times Style section. I flip through the pages until I come across the portraits of smiling couples and I know I've got a good, solid hour of unadulterated happiness ahead of me as I read the wedding announcements. It feels delightfully voyeuristic. From these short writeups, we learn the couples' ages, as well as their careers and alma maters. We are privy to their religious affiliations; we even gain knowledge of the families these people are coming from and the occupations of their parents. I love to speculate about the bride and groom's first date and courtship using only the limited details published in the Times. And sometimes, just the facts about a couple can paint a pretty interesting portrait of who these people are. How do you feel about wedding announcements in your local newspaper? Are they an antiquated tradition or a special public announcement of your love for one another? Leave a comment below and let us know!—Abbe Wright, assistant to the editor-in-chief, Elegant Bride
