One of the most important tasks on your wedding to-do list is to register for gifts. Your guests are going to want to get you and your fiance household items that you both want and need, so it's important to really think about which items you use every day as well as which items will fit in with your entertaining style. We spoke with Vicki Lang at Crate &Barrel for her top tips and when to register and what to register for. Here's what she had to say: — Anne Chertoff

How soon after a couple gets engaged should they register?

We recommend registering 4-6 months after a couple gets engaged. Once a couple has registered they should check back in about once a month to make sure there are plenty of items for guests to choose from for the bridal shower and wedding gifts. Also, many stores introduce new merchandise on a monthly basis so it's great to check back often for new products. We also suggest couples consider registering soon after their engagement especially if they are planning on having an engagement party.

What's the best way to determine what you need?

upgrade and take advantage of some of the wonderful new features available. Think about your needs today, but also in the future.

You may live in an apartment now but soon you might be hosting your first big dinner party in your own house. Discuss with your partner your likes, dislikes and style. Also, as a couple, you'll have lots of opportunities to entertain friends and family. Think ahead and register for those items that make your entertaining fun and stylish.

What factors about their guests should a couple take into consideration when registering?

Always give your guests a variety of price points and enough items; provide enough options for engagement, shower and wedding gifts. Also, don't be shy about registering for larger items like furniture. Group gifts are very popular--a fun way for friends and family to give you that 'splurge' item you've been dreaming of having in your home.

Are there any items that you suggest every couple register for?

While it is a personal choice, we think this is the time to register for cookware, dinnerware, stemware, barware, serving pieces, small electrics - coffee maker, griddle, etc. Again, don't forget to add some 'splurge' items! Remember registering is fun and about building your new life and home with your partner.

Is it true that couples should re-register for gifts at some point during their engagement? Or should they constantly monitor their registries?

I wouldn't call it re-register. Couples should definitely continue to monitor their registry and keep in mind that merchandise changes. After the wedding shower is a perfect time to add more items onto the registry. Couples will want to make sure there is still a good range of items to buy for the wedding. They can go online but they should also make a visit into a store for inspiration. Also, registering is an important task and it does not all have to be done in one day. It is always good to come back with fresh eyes.
