No meltdowns

I always recommend brides hire a professional makeup artist for their wedding day. I've spoken to too many wedding photographers who say that DIY brides look fine on camera for the first hour or so—until their makeup inevitably wears off because they don't have the skills or product knowledge to ensure that their makeup holds up for 10 hours or more (it's a tricky business).

But after surveying many bridal beauty experts over the years, one product that always stands out repeatedly as a must-have for the wedding day is a primer or mattifier. These products, which are smoothed onto skin before applying makeup, not only fill in fine lines and pores to create a smooth canvas, they also work to absorb excess oil—meaning makeup stays on longer.

One mattifier I've recently been loving is Dermelect Cosmeceutical's Pore Revolution and T-Zone Mattifier . Not only does it do a great job of controlling shine, but it also contains calming agents and salicylic acid, which is perfect for my sensitive, sometimes breakout-prone skin. —Lauren Matthews, associate editor, Brides.com Magazines
