A stylish option

The jury's still out on garters. Some think they're a sweet-and-sassy tradition, possibly a fun, hidden "something blue," others simply can't stand the idea. I'm not going to list the pros and cons (though feel free to leave a comment with your stance on the issue!), but simply present a cute option for those in favor—and maybe convert a few nay-sayers. DC resident Julianne Smith creates handcrafted garters, from the preppy-chic made from polka-dotted grosgrain ribbon (shown here) to simple, sleek black and white to wilder options in animal print. Julianne herself told me that she thinks a lot brides are anti-garter because they can't find one to fit their style. "That's exactly why I designed my collection the way I did!" she says. She can even create a custom order using fabric from bridesmaids' dresses or a scrap of a mother or grandmother's wedding dress. Check out all of the options on her website, juliannesmith.com.—Kim Forrest, Assistant Editor, Brides Local Magazines
