Modern Bride visits The Early Show

Honeymoons & Destination Weddings

Holger Eckstein

I just got back from The Early Show on CBS where I was on to do a segment about "How to Wed Like a Celeb without Breaking the Bank." I was up to shower at 5 am so I could be in hair and makeup by 5:30. It's a true testament to the power of makeup that anyone can be made to look human at that hour! Nikki Wang, who does the hair and makeup for almost all of our Modern Bride covers, was nice enough to come over to my house at the crack of dawn to help me get ready. We squeezed into my tiny bathroom together because that's the place where the light is best...and I try to pretend I'm still sleeping while she does my hair. My notes sit on my lap and I quiz myself from time to time on the fabulous resorts I plan to mention on air—The Cove Eleuthera in the Bahamas, for example, where Mariah Carey recently wed, has an exclusive feel and great rates (doubles from $235). So it turns out celebrities like a deal too. ...

There's more!

At the studio, I ignore the plates of bagels and fruits in the Green Room. The last thing I want is food stuck in my teeth when I'm being interviewed...though I imagine no one at The Early Show would let that happen to me. (Do they check guests' smiles before they turn the camera on you? I've never noticed, but maybe.)

The segment flies by. Three minutes feels like about 30 seconds when you're on air and I was able to give lots of tips—remember your passport for Mexico! Consider booking your trip to Europe during the shoulder season to get better rates! (That's late April/early May. Or late September/early October.) We cover everything except the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa on The Big Island of Hawaii. I guess Julie Chen felt we had run out of time so she never asked me about an affordable place to have a destination wedding in Hawaii. Too bad, because the Sheraton has plenty of great packages...and they even have their own on-site wedding chapel. Well, I guess that's what Modern Bride magazine is for. We talk about this hotel and others in our June/July issue, still on newsstands until July 14th. So go grab your copy if you haven't already. You don't even have to get up early to score an issue! —Antonia van der Meer
