There's no singular way to have a "traditional" wedding—it all depends on what culture's traditions you're honoring. In "Faces of Love," in our January issue, we show how brides in parts of the world like Korea, India, and Mexico, Nigeria, and Sweden traditionally dress for their special day, and we hope their looks will inspire you for yours. Our makeup artist at the photo shoot, Paul Innis at Warren-Tricomi Artist Management for Avon Cosmetics, suggests customizing a look by taking inspiration from your roots (or even borrowing from some for which you have an affinity), then using your personal style to update them. Love the Indian bride's dramatic eye makeup, but wary about pairing it with her dark red lip? Try a softer lip instead. Or take the plum eye shadow from the Swedish bride and make that the focus. Some other ways to incorporate touches of ethnic heritage for the occasion: Decorate the cake with a pattern inspired by Indian henna tattoos or Portuguese lace, embroider your family crest into the slip of your gown, or sew a traditional saying or wish of good luck onto a ribbon that's then tied around the bridal bouquet. Celebrating your heritage will make the big day that much more memorable—even the models at our photo shoot were proud to be able to honor long-standing family traditions. —Elizabeth Swanson, BRIDES Fashion & Beauty Department
