Picking the right pair of shoes for your wedding day isn't an easy task. You want shoes that look great, of course, but they also have to be comfortable. I talked to Ron Davis of Shoes to Dye For in Natick, who gave great tips about finding the perfect pair. You can shop online at the Dyeable Shoe Store.—Kim Forrest, Editor, Brides Boston
When should you pick out your shoes, and what information should you have before you start shopping? "You should buy your shoes before your first dress fitting," Ron says. "That way, your dress can be properly hemmed. We recommend the bride bring a swatch of her wedding dress fabric (or the color she wants her shoes dyed) when she comes in. You might think your dress is white, but there are lots of different shades of white. A fabric swatch can help us find a shoe that matches your dress fabric, or we can dye a shoe to match."
If you're not used to wearing high heels, should you stick with flats for your wedding day shoes? "I don't recommend going more than an inch higher than what you're used to," says Ron. "If you do want to go higher, wear the shoes around the house to get accustomed to the feeling."
What colors are brides dyeing their shoes? "We're seeing everything—cobalt blue, red, green," Ron says. "Sometimes a bride will match her shoes to her bridesmaid dresses, which is really fun. But I'm seeing a lot of Tiffany blue and the cobalt blue that Sarah Jessica Parker wore in the Sex and the City movie."
What are some of your most popular shoes? "Brides are liking platform shoes that have a peep toe," says Ron. "The platform makes the high heel a bit more comfortable. A great example is Benjamin Adams' Scarlet shoe (shown here)."
What do you think is the next big thing in bridal shoe fashion? "More bling!" Ron says. "We'll definitely be seeing more rhinestones and sparkle on shoes in the next year."
