All about Pam's The Office wedding dress

It's been a long wait (six seasons, one broken engagement and one romantic proposal in the rain) but The Office's Jim and Pam are finally tying the knot! Earlier this month, I got a chance to talk with the show's costume designer Alysia Raycraft, who told me all about creating the bridal style for the special hour long wedding episode.

Budget conscious brides will be pleased to learn that Jim and Pam's wedding proves you don't have to spend a lot to look great on the wedding day. Raycraft stayed true to The Office's realistic feeling by choosing wedding styles that she thought the characters would actually go out and buy. "I thought that Pam would indeed possibly go to David's Bridal because it's along her economic strata," she said. She also loved that the Empire waist on Pam's crinkle chiffon A-line gown could allow the character's pregnancy to show while still looking stylish (click here to get Pam's wedding dress for $399 at David's Bridal and here to see the silver bridesmaid dresses for $145).

Don't be surprised if Jenna Fischer shows up in a similar style at her wedding: the engaged actress saw her television nuptials as research for her real-life wedding. "When we first put her in the dress, it was as if we were dressing her for her real wedding, and she was really touched by that," Raycraft said. "She had been all the while referencing her own wedding through different things that we were trying out. She said that she was going to take this idea and that idea and incorporate them with her own wedding."

For Jim's wedding-day style, Raycraft stuck with a classic look, dressing the groom in a black Hugo Boss suit. If you look closely at the wedding photos, you'll probably also notice that Jim's tie is cut in half. Raycraft couldn't reveal the plot twist behind his abbreviated neckwear (all she'll say is "there is something strange with his tie"), although she did hint that Jim's new dapper look isn't just for his wedding day. She told me, "There's a plot that you'll see that comes up where he starts wearing suits." —Kathryn Papanek

Watch Pam and Jim say "I do" on the special The Office wedding episode on October 8 on NBC.

    1. I think she looks pregnant and the fabric and beading look cheap. The straps are too long and her boobs hang out too much. I realize "Pam" is a secretary and probably doesn't have a lot of money, but I thought she still had class. I think there are better options for her. I certainly would be SHOCKED if the actress wore this for her real wedding. I haven't seen the BM yet so I can't comment on them.

    2. As a longtime "Office" fan, this is so Pam and Jim. Also, who else finds it funny that Angela is a bridesmaid?

    3. Jim and Pam are having a baby....that's PROBABLY why she looks pregnant. The dress is SO Pam, you obviously don't watch the office, Vivian.

    5. Personally, I think Vivian found out the dress was from David's Bridal and decided to be a snob. Additionally, the fit of the dress has to do with how they ultimately decided to tailor it, not the dress' quality. Last of all, you can't tell anything about the quality appearance of the beading from the photo. I hope, for her own sake, that Vivian realizes that in the end it's about the marriage, not the wedding.

    6. I believe they tailored the dress to help Pam look more pregnant, since the actress isn't pregnant in real life. Pam is a modest person, she WOULD go to David's Bridal. It's nice to see a TV show be budget conscious and even stick with the characters personalities for their wedding.

    7. and Pam isn't a secretary anymore, she's a salesperson, just so you know...

    8. This is totally Jim and Pam! I love that they are staying true to characters and you are absolutely right Alexis it?s about the marriage not the dress.

Also, did anyone else notice that Jim's tie is cut off?...

    9. I did notice the tie was cut off, but thought maybe there was just an optical illusion there or something. Maybe all will be revealed on the show. Thanks, Anna. :)

    10. I LOVE it! Can't wait to watch the episode this Thursday! I agree with all you sane people. Her dress is character appropriate considering budget and the fact that she's preggers. The wardrobe people could have altered it to fit her however they wanted. It is exactly as it should be. :-)

    11. I love it! That was my wedding gown!! Vivian you're a naive ignorant bitch and should keep your useless comment to yourself. You're a moron and thanks to everyone else who had GOOD things to say!

    12. Vivian is just a poo head, and she doesn't know what she's talking about because her head is full of poo!

    13. I think Pam should have worn a J Crew dress. I just don't see her as a David's kind of girl.
There's nothing wrong with buying a dress from David's, but I know that, for me, I would never do that. My wedding is very special to me, and I want to select something very, very special to wear that day. I see Pam as being a sentimental kind of girl who would feel the same way.
