Modern Bride
A passion for fashion
I just got back from the Tents at Bryant Park where I have been attending the fashion shows for designers like Badgley Mischka. There's always a lot of excitement in the air: photographers jockeying for position, celebrities being interviewed, earnest assistants talking into their headphones, crowds of people taking their seats (or taking someone's else seat!). Then the lights go down and the models begin their catwalks: serious, focused, high-stepping walks towards the bank of flashing camera lights.
It's the iconic image of the supermodel and high fashion. We've all seen it a thousand times on TV. But it happened this morning that my front-row seat was off to the side, very close to the end of the catwalk. It afforded me a wonderfully intimate peek backstage where I could see each model right before she stepped out onto the runway. The designer himself was busy making some last-minute adjustments—smoothing a dress, tugging on a belt, repositioning a necklace seconds before each girl began her walk.
What was most interesting to see, however, was how much fun each model was having. There they were, smiling, sometimes giggling, nodding, bouncing to the music while they waited their turns. And then suddenly, when they were given the green light to proceed, the serious supermodel face took over (you know the one, with the slightly blank, vaguely unhappy stare). And I realized that as super cool and confident as she looks striding down the runway in gorgeous gowns and sexy frocks, I was glad to get a glimpse of the giddy girlishness behind those disinterested masks—and to see that models, like us, love the clothes they're in and the feeling that you can only get from donning something fabulous and knowing you look great in it. —Antonia van der Meer, editor-in-chief, Modern Bride
