Reel Review: The Time Traveler's Wife

Courtesy of New Line Cinema
For me, the best part of the wedding in The Time Traveler's Wife wasn't the clothing the characters wore (although the bridal fashions are amazing—check out my interview with the film's costume designer to learn more) but rather the heartfelt celebration of the love between the bride and groom. Based on Audrey Niffenegger's bestselling novel, the movie is about Clare (Rachel McAdams) and Henry's (Eric Bana) struggle to build a life together despite a rare genetic disorder that causes Henry to travel uncontrollably through time. The couple's repeated separations and reunions will resonate with anyone who has ever been parted from a loved one, and Henry's unexpected time traveling episode during the wedding will ring true with any bride who has worried that her groom might be late to the altar.
A word of warning though—the time traveling conceit makes for a few confusing moments (the movie can be difficult to understand at times if you haven't read the book) so I suggest suspending your disbelief and letting the love story draw you in. And as for the bittersweet ending: bring tissues! —Kathryn Papanek
