    Summer menu from Katchkie Farm

This weekend, I stopped by Katchkie Farm in Columbia County, NY, for a special "Farm to Table Dinner" to celebrate the"100 Mile Menu" from event caterers, Great Performances. (I didn't intentionally coordinate my outfit to match these gorgeous sunflowers on the farm, but I'm very happy I could fit right in.)

The farm was established in 2006 by Great Performances, the caterer of record for events at many iconic locations throughout NYC such as the Plaza Hotel, Jazz at Lincoln Center and more. (They also did the heavy lifting on this summer's Today Show Wedding.)

For Great Performances, local flavor doesn't mean incorporating a stylistic touch just for ambiance. It means using local and seasonal ingredients to craft delicious and memorable menus—supporting sustainable agriculture along the way. Their 100 Mile Menu is a straight-forward description of what it is—ingredients from within a 100-mile radius of NYC. It's available for even the most formal reception locations they service. But it was certainly special to be able to enjoy the menu at its source, the farm.

I've never had basil ice before, but crunchy ice shavings in cute little paper dispensers passed around during the cocktail hour were a perfect and simple refresher for a sticky summer evening. There was even local vodka made from Hudson Valley apples supplied by Core Vodka, a small batch distillery in the area.

We ate dinner at two long tables in the middle of a field. I am a fan of using long tables for dining, even for a large number of guests. It gives a family-style feeling. And using china place settings for a farm dinner gives off a wonderful Alice-in-Wonderland feeling. I've printed the menu below.

But no matter where you live, you can ask your caterer how to incorporate seasonal and local as you plan the food and florals for your wedding. It's a beautiful way to celebrate.—Michelle Preli
