Michigan

Last month, I flew home to California to attend a friend's wedding in San Francisco. The entire evening was absolutely lovely, and one of my favorite moments was when the bride surprised her Boston-bred husband with a groom's cake shaped like a Red Sox cap. The look on his face was priceless—and it convinced me that a surprise groom's cake is totally the way to go. Use this opportunity to be creative—anything is fair game to incorporate into the design: his hobbies, favorite foods and drinks, or even quirky inside jokes. Another great idea: If you met in college, ask your cake designer to create a confection in honor of your alma mater, like this University of Michigan design from Ann Arbor-based Cake Nouveau. —Heather Lee, Editor, Brides Michigan
