Should the gifts equal the cost of the wedding?

Should couples be able to make back most of the wedding costs in gifts? This week in our Brides.com Forums one bride wants to know if guests are required to give presents that equal the amount of money the couple spends on each guest. See what advice our brides have to offer here:

Some brides believe that the guests do not need to give presents that are worth a certain amount. "There is no such rule," says Myra. "People should spend what they can afford, and bridal couples should be considerate, if they register, selecting gifts at various price points."

Others do attempt to give presents in relation to the cost of the wedding. "I was taught this rule and have followed it for every wedding I went to," says Amlewis83.

And some brides feel that gift giving rules vary in different parts of the country. "I definitely think that is a regional thing," says ChelsRae85. "I think it's the people of that area manufacturing their own rules of etiquette, which is fine, but strange to the rest of us."
