In Search of the Perfect Wave

When I first laid eyes on the double-pronged curling iron known as the Nalu Waver, I was intrigued. Could this tool deliver on its promise of natural-looking, loose waves (as opposed to the usual, less au naturel, ringlet-y curls)? I decided to put it to the pro test and packed it up into one of the four trunks of gowns and hair accessories bound for Palm Springs, where we were set to photograph our annual summer hairstyle portfolio.
'Round about day two and hairstyle number six or seven, I handed it to our hairstylist, Liam Dunn. "You might try this," I said, "but only if you want to." (Far be it from me to force a product on a pro.) Well, fast-forward to the next shot, and the most gorgeous, rolling waves ever. (Thanks, Liam!) And from the look of it, they were easy to achieve. Instead of rolling and clamping your hair into spirals, you weave sections of hair, figure-eight-style, between the two barrels, hold for a few seconds and ta-da: perfectly realized, wildly natural-looking waves. Check out page 256 of the Aug/Sept issue to see the results for yourself.
By the way, Liam was so impressed with the Nalu Waver, I happily let him keep it. Lucky me: as beauty editor, I get to call in another Nalu for Modern Bride's beauty closet. —Mary Clarke, beauty director, Modern Bride
