Pearls go beyond the strand at Mikimoto
Mikimoto is known for its beautiful cultured pearls—always a great traditional choice for wedding gown and bridesmaid dress accessories. But at this season's jewelry show in Las Vegas, Mikimoto introduced a number of beautiful pieces that go beyond the standard strand.
There were two interesting cocktail rings called Chime—where the pearl clusters moved to produce a whispering clinking sound—one version featured Akoya cultured pearls set in 18K yellow gold for $3,700. The other featured diamonds set in 18K white gold for $6,200.
Many of their new pieces do double-duty as well—for instance, a pendant became a brooch. Another great option is the Pearls in Motion collection (shown here), where you can move pearls to different places on the necklace chain for different looks. If you're in investing in a special piece of jewelry, it's nice to think you can wear it a number of ways.
I also loved a necklace where the strand was made of different descending shades of pearls. It shows the great variation in color pearls can achieve, plus illustrates just what a skill it is to match colors perfectly in a traditional pearl necklace.
And a first for Mikimoto, they've created a hoop earring collection. There are nine different hoop designs, all with Akoya cultured pearls set in 18K gold—$3200-$9000.
As for my snapshot of a display of a wall of pearl strands, it was impressive just to see so many pearls in one place. It was literally like being in a sea of pearls. —Michelle Preli
