Masters of Reception sneak peek tonight

TLC's new Masters of Reception is one wedding reality show that's definitely worth watching. The show follows New Jersey caterers Robert and Jerry Frungillo as they pull off outrageous weddings requests (they once built two rooms out of ice for a couple who wanted to create a traditional Russian ice bar). Planning a wedding that's a little more down-to-earth? In honor of his new show, Robert Frungillo shared his best reception cost-cutting tips with us. —Kathryn Papanek
Don't choose a buffet over a sit-down meal just to save money. The idea that a buffet is inherently cheaper is a myth, Frungillo says. A buffet has slighter lower service costs but requires more food than a sit-down meal, so it often doesn't end up costing any less.
Be flexible about your wedding date. Frungillo says that the number one way to save money on your reception is to marry on a less popular day (like a Friday night or Sunday morning).
Choose an inexpensive entree. The main dish typically makes up the largest proportion of the food costs, so choose a dish like stuffed chicken instead of lobster tails or fillet mignon.
