Loving the Cake Boss

Michaela blogged last week about her mixed feelings for the show Hitched or Ditched. Here's a show I'm loving: Cake Boss on TLC. It's a reality show that follows Buddy Valastro, owner of Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, NJ. We at MB know Buddy well—our Lifestyle Director, Linda Hirst, discovered him years ago—and we feature his cakes in our magazine all the time. But even I had no idea what goes on behind the scenes at his shop. First of all, Buddy's a trip. He resembles a young Joe Mantegna, and his Jersey accent is as thick as buttercream. Buddy's surrounded by his siblings, mother, and brother-in-law, who all work in the bakery. There's also a crew of burly bakers that look and sound like they could've been extras on The Sopranos. (In last week's episode I think the phrase "breaking balls" was used five times.) Everyone on staff is either yelling at or playing pranks on each other...or they're making some of the coolest cakes I've ever seen. In the premiere episode, Buddy & co. made one for retired firemen that featured a house with actual smoke coming out of it, and a fire truck with working lights. This week is all about wedding cakes. Check it out—I bet you'll get some great ideas. —Kara Corridan, executive editor, Modern Bride
