    Pleasantly Surprised

    michaela.jpg

I attended a lovely wedding last weekend. The morning ceremony took place at my alma mater, Fordham: The bride and groom are pals from college so it was fun to be back and reminisce with old friends. A lunch reception at a nearby club followed. Everything was as expected: The father of the bride gave a moving toast, the best man poked fun at the groom, the band sounded great...

But then, the floor was cleared and the bride, along with her three sisters, kicked off her heels and performed a traditional Irish step dance. The crowd got into it, enthusiastically clapping and cheering for each woman as she came forward for her solo. They were so great, especially the bride, who didn't let her long, full gown slow her down. The routine was lively and entertaining, for sure, but the excitement of it all was the element of surprise. It's this moment from the wedding (plus the groom's comical attempt to follow in his new wife's footsteps, literally, with a brief performance of his own) that I will remember years from now.

This got me thinking about my own wedding and how my guests will recall the celebration. What will make a lasting impression on them? I like to think they'll remember it all (what bride doesn't?), but I know only certain things will stand out after the night is over. Unexpected moments certainly don't have to be elaborate. I think it's a matter of adding personal touches here and there. Tell me, how will you put your stamp on the wedding you've planned? —Michaela Garibaldi, assistant managing editor, Modern Bride
