Modern Bride magazine
Experience a Different Kind of Honeymoon
As art director at Modern Bride, I'm one of the people responsible for the look of the magazine and I'm involved with all of our different departments: fashion, beauty, reception and travel.
When designing MB's travel section, I get to see the photos that couples send us of their honeymoons, along with the photos of destinations we feature in each issue. There's a fairly new idea out there that I see just-married couples taking part in: volunteer vacations. The two of you can travel all over the country or the world while helping worthy causes. You can probably find a trip with a cause or a location that is meaningful to you, and it's a great way to experience a new place.
These volunteer vacations run the gamut—from wildlife conservation expeditions in Costa Rica to habitat restoration at Point Reyes National Seashore in California with the Sierra Club to teaching English or helping build schools in Peru or Tanzania with Global Volunteers.
I went online and clicked the Voluntourism tab at the bottom of Travelocity's homepage, which detailed its Travel for Good program and links to several volunteer travel partners. It was a good starting point for researching trips, but there are several other sites as well, such as Globe Aware and i-to-i. Trip lengths vary as do the prices, but they are generally less expensive than a typical honeymoon away.
