On the subway uptown to work this morning, I watched a young woman across the aisle doing her morning maquillage. First came a flurry of pressed powder applied with a fat brush. Step two was a thorough dusting-off of the fallout that had landed on her lap. Next came eye shadow (powder again) in chestnut brown, followed by mascara (no easy feat in a lurching subway car) and finally, a few swipes of coral blush.

So how did she look? Actually, not so great, under the cruel fluorescence of the NYC Transit System. Warm tones barely register and cool shades go ghoulish in this beauty killer of a light.

But chances are our subway rider's complexion came alive once she exited the subway and stepped into the sun. Which only underscores the style counsel we've all heard a million times before: Do your makeup with an eye to where you want it to look best. Better yet, when it comes to your wedding-day (or night) maquillage, do your makeup in the light you plan to be in. It's an easy way to help you put your best face forward. -Mary Clarke, Beauty Director, Modern Bride
