Wedding Cakes & Desserts
Sweet savings

I'm always excited when I find out that a fashion designer has created a less expensive line (like Alfred Angelo's Recessionista collection) so I was excited to learn that the trend might be spreading to other industries. A case in point: noted cake designer Gail Watson has created A Simple Cake, a Web site that allows brides to order cakes that have all the class and style of her delicious confections at a much less expensive price. "The designs have been streamlined to be elegant and beautiful, and not necessarily plain," she says. Trying to save money on your cake? Watson suggests that you be frank with your baker from the beginning. "If I know that there is a limit to the budget, I can guide her to making some good and effectual choices," says Watson. "There are many ways for me to work a design that it might have a similar impact but at less expense." —Kathryn Papanek
