Miss California, gay marriage and weddings
There's quite a bit of controversy over Miss California's comments on gay marriage during the Miss America Pageant last Sunday. In a world where everyone is trying to be politically correct, her response took people by surprise.
Perez Hilton asked if she believed in gay marriage and her response was, "We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."
Her answer ignited a controversy over a controversy, which is Perez's specialty. I do admit Miss California was put in an awkward position. When contestants are asked the "tough" questions they should be honest and truthful. For the most part it seems answers fare far better with judges when they are vague and less polarizing, like wanting to eliminate hunger or cure cancer.
Miss Cali could have been a smidge less self righteous in her answer, but considering her beliefs, there really was no PC way for her to spin it. The ultimate travesty is that the media attention shifted the focus from the winner, Miss North Carolina, and the fact she won fair and square.
Personally I don't think this was the proper forum to discuss gay marriage. The conversation is bigger than a quick Q&A, and the issue is one that comes up every few years and divides people across our country. The Miss America pageant should be about wearing ridiculous outfits that explain your state, gowns with tons of beading, and looking amazing in a swimsuit. Just like a wedding, a pageant should be easy, breezy and lighthearted. Keep any and all controversy out of it. —Oscar Cervera, Production Director, Modern Bride
