    Wedding crashers

    michaela.jpg

Last weekend my fiance and I crashed a wedding, sort of. This wasn't a crash that Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn would have orchestrated (technically, we had permission to be there; the band knew we were coming to hear them) or been proud of (we stood against the back wall and tried desperately to avoid eye contact with the bride and anyone in a tux), but nonetheless, we weren't invited guests.

Like good little crashers, we stayed out of the way (even my fiance, who, I'm sure, would have joined the dance floor frenzy with gusto had I not been at his side) and followed our instructions perfectly: dress up, arrive at 10:00, stay for 20 minutes. Check, check, check. We were extremely pleased to find that the band both sounds great live and has no trouble keeping guests on their feet. Their demo DVD didn't lie. A great relief...

Since we'd traveled three hours to see the band, we filled our weekend with other wedding preparations. We met briefly with the caterer and strolled through the park where our ceremony will likely take place. With the snow finally gone, we can begin to envision where we might like to marry. In front of that elegant fountain? Maybe by a weeping willow?

What I loved most was walking through the pretty town, meandering in and out of shops (happily sampling local chocolates that may find their way into our welcome bags) and thinking about where our out-of-town guests might want to go and what they may like to see. As much as our wedding is about the two of us, it's more about our families and friends coming together to share the weekend with us. Showing them—and anyone who crashes—a good time is essential. —Michaela Garibaldi, Assistant Managing Editor, Modern Bride
