    What guests remember

    lisa_milbrand.jpg

A few of my friends have mentioned feeling intimidated about inviting me to their wedding, worried that I'd be tsk-tsking over a droopy centerpiece or too salty hors d'oeuvres.

But honestly, most guests (myself included) aren't there to critique your wedding: They just want to have a good time. And providing that good time isn't always about splurging on the couture cake or the super-swank band. Sometimes, the things that stand out years later are what you'd least expect.

For instance, my husband still brings up the potato pancakes from our best friends' wedding 10 years ago; I remember slow dancing with my newlywed hubby to their band's rendition of our own wedding song. One couple surprised us with an extremely brief ceremony—the processional and recessional took longer than the rest of the proceedings; another had a very heartfelt (and hilarious) sermon, culled from notes the couple gave their officiant about their relationship. If you expected me to pick the brides' dresses or bouquets out of a lineup—or wanted me to tell you who served the vegetable pasta and who had salmon, I'd be hard pressed to tell you. But what I do remember is the joy, the welcoming spirit and the details that really seemed to fit the couple.

We'd love to hear what you remember about the weddings you've attended. Share your stories here. —Lisa Milbrand, acting deputy editor, Modern Bride magazine
