    Runway Review

New York— It was wonderful talking with Carlos Ramirez today at Liancarlo. He showed us the dresses from the new collection, as well as some from the recent past season. For the most part, the gowns run in the $3000 range. But you are getting a lot of craftsmanship and design, with lace crafted in Italy and wonderful hand sewn details.

I especially enjoyed hearing him talk about the design process. The collection started this season with 120 sketches, he said, but only 24 made the cut to the pattern room. Once there, he looked at the dresses realized in muslin, made changes, and edited more closely to come up with the final 12 that were actually made. He says working this way helps him narrow the collection to make the best dresses. He says this process makes each dress look like "a jewel box."

His passion for his work comes through. He told us he grew up surrounded by his mother's sewing business. His family came from Cuba and he lives in Miami. As a young man, he found himself in law school, but not particularly fascinated by the subject, although he was a good student. So he decided to try to design evening dresses. His mother was not particularly thrilled at this change in plans. But his first collection was picked up by Saks and Neiman's and he was on his way. Twenty years later, you can see he still enjoys his work. —Michelle Preli
