Runway Review
Painting at Tiffany's
New York—Carolina Herrera turned Tiffany & Co. into a painterly parade. Taking over the main floor of the iconic jeweler's New York City store on Fifth Avenue, she showed a breathtaking collection remarkable in that each gown had its own individual inspiration—painters loved by Mrs. Herrera.
This was a different approach for her, she told us before the show, standing among the dresses hanging in rows waiting for the models. Each gown was a collection of one. She wanted to design an homage to the great painters, translating the details from the artwork into the dresses. During the design process, she told us, it got to be very funny as they remarked about the dresses, "Where is Matisse?"
There was the Matisse with satin petals, Degas with the ballet point d'esprit skirt and tiny blue ballet slipper ribbon detailing, Monet with delicate hand-painted water lilies, Goya with the black scalloped lace applique bolero, and more. Each of the 20 models carried a different bouquet selected to match the spirit of their dress.
Tiffany was a beautiful setting for the show. The models walked down aisles between the jewelry cases, surrounded by giant arrangements of sprayed white branches dripping with strands of crystal beads. The audience sat in silvery cane chairs. Coming home tonight, I felt it was a wonderful New York moment. —Michelle Preli
