Donald Trump's advice for grooms and fathers-of-the-bride

Last October Brides.com was invited to help one of The Celebrity Apprentice teams compete in their task of selling wedding dresses. While we can't tell you which team we worked with or what happened at the sale, we did get a chance to speak with Donald Trump on his experience as a groom and future father-of-the-bride. Here's his wedding advice: —Anne Chertoff

Looking back on your wedding day is there any advice you would give grooms on what to do or what not to do?

I'd say to enjoy the day to the fullest, because it's a celebration of a very special part of your life that will hopefully remain that way for a very long time.

As the father of two daughters—future brides—what part of their weddings are you looking forward to the most? Walking her down the aisle, father/daughter dance, making a toast, etc?

I'd say I look forward to all those things, provided I know the groom is the right one. I'm protective by nature and the ceremony is joyous if it indicates a good choice on both sides, otherwise it'd be a concern more than a celebration.

Do you expect your future son-in-law to "ask your permission" to marry your daughters and if so, as a past groom are there any words of wisdom you can give future grooms?

I think I would, it seems proper and respectful. The most important thing for future grooms is to make it clear that the well-being of the daughter has been carefully considered. It's nice to have the feelings of love but that means responsibility, foresight and reason are involved as well. That should be made very clear. I'm a romantic person but I know the value of being pragmatic. It has to be balanced, and those indications should be there.

As a groom, was there a part of the wedding that you planned or enjoyed planning?

I was very pleased and relieved when Melania told me my tuxedo was in the closet and ready to go. Everything was taken care of and I enjoyed the spontaneity of a very wonderful day. I enjoyed planning the vision of seeing Melania walk down the aisle, and that alone was worth it to me.

As a guest at a wedding—not the father of the bride or groom—what's your favorite part of a wedding ceremony and/or reception?

I like the formality, it's almost a royal moment, and yet it's celebratory rather than somber. The traditions of exchanging vows, the rings, the cake, the toasts—it's all a good time.

    1. I'm glad that The Donald's large mug is no longer the first thing I see on the home page. He's been married (and divorced), what, three or four times? Including one marriage where he had an escape clause in his pre-marital agreement, so he didn't have to pay out a lot if the marriage dissolved before five years. And, whaddya know, it did! What a hypocrite. He's the very last person whose advice on marriage I would be looking for!
