Let them eat cake

Courtesy of Carousel Cakes
Lately, I've seen several weddings in which the couple decided to forgo a towering, sugar-flower-laden, over-the-top wedding cake in favor of several several smaller, simply-decorated cakes displayed on cute cake stands. I'm super in love with this idea because not only is it a money saver (ornate sugar flowers are beautiful--but pricey) it also means you and your guests will be able to sample a bunch of different cake flavors. Plus, something about it just seems so casual and homespun.
New York is obviously not lacking in bakeries that can whip up delicious cakes, but I'd suggest checking out the confections from Carousel Cakes, in Rockland County—Oprah just deemed their Red Velvet Cake one of her favorite things. Other sure bets: Billy's Bakery, Nine Cakes, and Baked.
As for cake stands, some of my favorites are from Fishs Eddy, Rosanna, and on etsy. —Lauren Matthews, associate editor, Brides New York
