How to choose a honeymoon destination

1. How to choose your honeymoon site

First, make a list of your interests. Mediterranean cruises can be a good option if you want to spend your time sightseeing, though the atmosphere on board will be less intimate and romantic. If one of you wants relaxation and the other has adventure in mind, you don't have to choose between the two if you find the right location. For instance, if he wants to hike through rainforests, and you want to get in some beach time, locations like Cabo San Lucas and Costa Rica will accommodate both. If sightseeing and culture interests both of you, Europe is an obvious choice, but don't forget Cancun...

2. Timing

The Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1st to November 30th, which means rates will drop in the Caribbean--but be sure to buy hurricane insurance if you take advantage of those low offers.

If you're braving the Euro-dollar exchange rate and venturing to the Continent, don't try too hard to avoid the tourist packed summer months because in many areas (including Greece, Italy, and other Mediterranean destinations) shops and restaurants shut down after October and don't re-open until March or April.

If you're headed to France, remember that the natives take their summer vacations in July and August. Not only are all means of transportation packed, but many major businesses are closed for those two months. Paris in the Springtime can be problematic as well, since there is a public holiday nearly every week in May, during which stores, banks and museums are closed.

3. Money

Don't travel with a lot of cash. Credit cards work everywhere and ATMs are on every other corner in major cities. Yes, the ATMs will charge you a fee of a few dollars, but it's better to pay that than lose a substantial chunk of change. You might also consider increasing your ATM withdrawal limit when you travel so you can take more cash out at a time. Before you take off, call your credit card company and ask what their policies are for overseas purchases. Some cards charge a fee just for converting the exchange rate.

A good travel planner can help you calculate your daily expenditures, including meals, drinks, and shopping. If you find that your dream honeymoon is too pricey, you might consider opening a honeymoon registry. Through a honeymoon registry your guests can contribute money towards your trip as their gift. If your guests pay over the cost of the trip, make sure your travel agency will refund the money directly to you. —Tammy Levent

  Love to help you. I come to Atlanta quite often. The great thing about Travel is that it can be done from anywhere and everywhere. Always look for an agency that has experience and knowledge, not necessarily one closest to you. AGain, I would love to help and we have to act on this quickly since it is for January.
